Week Six: The Third Eye Chakra

The Third Eye, Brow Chakra, or Anja in Sanskrit, meaning “to perceive” is the 6th chakra. It is our center of intuition, imagination, psychic abilities, memory, wisdom, and dreams. It is the gateway to higher consciousness. From here, we are able to reflect, discern, and gain deeper insight into ourselves and the world. It is where we form an understanding of the world, and develop our perspectives.

The third eye governs the brain, ears, eyes, nose, pituitary and pineal glands, and the neurological system.

When this chakra is open and in balance, we have strong intuition, and we trust the messages we receive. We are able to see the big picture, and have the ability to find positive meaning in the things that happen in our lives. A healthy imagination, strong memory, and an active dream-life are other indicators of a balanced brow chakra.

When this energy center becomes deficient, we may feel out of touch with our imagination, skeptical, and tend to follow others beliefs. It is also possible to be too open in this area. Without grounding energy, this chakra can become overly alert. Bad dreams, insomnia, memory issues, obsessiveness, depression, and cognitive difficulties are indicators of an over-active Third Eye.

Because the pineal gland creates serotonin and melatonin, an imbalance or blockage in this chakra can affect our sleep, mood and brain chemistry. Physically, out of balance this can manifest as frequent headaches, eye problems, and brain and neurological issues.

To keep this chakra in balance means developing an intimate trust with our intuition and inner wisdom. The more we learn to trust deeply in the spontaneous information we receive, the stronger this chakra becomes.
